Christian Siriano FW 2017 RTW
Guest Post: Olivia Orzech
First of all. I am HERE for Christian Siriano. I remember when he was on Project Runway with his emo hair and chain-clad vests and thinking “I love him”. After winning PR, he went on to have a mildly successful career and somehow landed himself a shoe collection at Payless. TBH, after the whole Payless thing, I thought his career was over. But about two years ago, his name started popping up again, especially with red carpet dresses. And now, our bb is back and killing it!
Let’s start with a chat about fabrics. Siriano went über trendy with this collection that includes velvet, satin, and metallics. Velvet has been making a comeback for a few years now, popping up on runways and red carpets in 2014. Within the past year though, velvet has become a staple for the runway and RTW brands like Target’s A New Day.
My favorite velvet piece from Siriano’s collection is this stunning trouser and bustier look (pictured above). I love the way this look has a subtle sexiness to it; there’s barely any skin showing, but the way the shell top shows off the bustier underneath and the flowy trousers define the waist, makes this look super femme. Not to mention, the velvet pulls the entire look into this chic, badass, sexy realm. I could absolutely see this as the perfect NYE look to ring in 2018!
Now let’s talk satin: Siriano’s satin pieces were all stunning, although my favorite was this menswear inspired look (pictured above). The burnt orange is crazy on trend right now – and it looks good on pretty much every skin tone. I love the balance he creates between the blocky suit jacket and the long, flowing, skirt with the high slit. What I love the most about this look is that it could absolutely be worn separately: i.e. the skirt with the bustier from the velvet look and the jacket paired with a leather pencil skirt.
And now for the look I am LIVING for: this silver and bronze metallic (pictured below) evening gown that just gave 1,000 fairies their wings. From the draping that just ~happens~ to accentuate curves to the high side slit and flowing fabric, this dress belongs on a Greek Goddess! I adore the bronze veining throughout the fabric, almost as if this is fabric made from a slab of metallic marble.
I couldn’t end this post without discussing Siriano’s runway inclusivity this season. Of his 55 looks, he had 7 worn by plus size models. This is a huge deal!! He wasn’t alone this season either, Michael Kors was also a notable designer with size inclusive models on his runway. This is phenomenal news for everyone because it tells us that designers are starting to realize that their clothing should be designed for EVERY woman, not just a 6-foot-tall, size 0, Amazonian Goddess. Making designer clothing accessible to women of varying sizes not only encourages great style, but it also encourages body positivity. When you open up your clothing to women of varying sizes, you’re saying that they too deserve to look beautiful and stylish. Plus, you’re going to make a helluva lot more money $$$
All in all, huge round of applause to Christian Siriano who created stunning pieces that have trendy fabrics with timeless silhouettes. I’m looking forward to what he’ll do for Spring 2018. Fingers crossed it involves unicorns and/or glitter.
