If you have been shopping lately, I am sure you are beginning to see the stores transition from winter sweaters to beautiful pastels. Have you wondered why everywhere you turn there is a shade of baby pink and light blue, in combination with grays? You can thank Pantone for that. Every year Pantone chooses a color of the year, and this year they chose not just one, but two colors of the year! Say hello to Rose Quartz and Serenity.
What is the significance of the color of the year?
Each year Pantone holds a top secret meeting with representatives from various nations’ color standards groups, where they choose a color for the following year. The Color of the Year is declared annually by Pantone to help guide designers, make-up artists, buyers, and other consumer-oriented companies plan their designs for future projects. Pantone states that color, “has always been an integral part of how a culture expresses the attitudes and emotions of the times”. For example, in the 1960s colors such as; Hot Pink, Lemon Chrome, and Bright Violet, were chosen in conjunction with the rise of youth culture, social revolution, and counterculture. Color speaks the times.
What are the colors of the year for 2016?
For 2016 Pantone chose two colors of the year: Rose Quartz and Serenity. Many people today are seeking mindfulness and well-being, and are more open to colors that will fulfill our yearning for security and reassurance. The softness of Rose Quartz and Serenity offer a calming effect to not only the eyes, but also to the mind.
Typically, we think pink for girls and blue for boys. We are currently living in a society where we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion. For example, women wearing menswear pieces, or men wearing skirts (flash back to Kanye West 2012). In many parts of the world there is a fine line differentiating what is a ‘boy’ or ‘girl’ look. This approach to fashion goes hand in hand with the societal movements towards gender equality. Both men and women have less concern about being judged or typecast when it comes to fashion and the use of color. That is why Rose Quartz and Serenity seem to complement the cultural norms for 2016. According to Pantone.com, “Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.”
How do you wear Rose Quartz and Serenity?
I am not typically one for pastels, if you haven’t noticed by now I love black. However, Rose Quartz and Serenity make me want to actually wear pastels. I love the fact you can combine both colors with black and it doesn’t look overrated. Both colors also look incredible with shades of gray, both light and dark. If you don’t want to sport a Rose Quartz top or Serenity blue pants, opt out for Color of the Year accessories.

A crossbody in Rose Quartz is a subtle way to wear the Color of the Year, I am obsessing over this one from kiki nass in Austin. Also, these Rose Quartz 3.1 Phillip Lim over sized sunnies are to die for! Crystals and gemstones are hot right now. Especially when they are in the rough, meaning they have not been polished and are basically just a lump of rock. Often times you will see boho inspired pendants and rings with rough gemstones or wire wrapped gemstones. These Samantha Wills Mineral Necklaces in Amazonite and Rose Quartz, are perfect for the boho jewelry trend, as well as sporting the color of the year. You can wear them together or separate, the look is up to you! You can find these and many other necklaces at kiki nass.

Rose Quartz and Serenity blue are the perfect springtime colors. Use shades of gray, black, and white to complement your Rose Quartz or Serenity attire. For a city chic look, try pairing a pair of Rose Quartz colored jeans with a light gray or white shirt, leather jacket, and some strappy pumps. To sport both Colors of the Year, wear a Rose Quartz colored top and accessorize with Serenity blue accessories. Look for key pieces such as a solid blouse, or jeans that can be used as staples in your wardrobe throughout the year. The key when working wearing pastel colors is to keep it light, and simple. Babes, you can even go all out and dye your hair these cotton candy Pantone shades. Now, it will involve bleaching, and it will involve a lot of up keep, but it would be worth it to have whimsical unicorn hair. Ammirght?! I highly recommend getting your hair professionally colored if you are trying to achieve one, or both, of these Pantone shades.
